Secrets of Endari #6: Geography
I want the world of Endari to feel simultaneously familiar to readers yet alien in many different ways.
How has that played out so far?
The Shendari Empire dominates a massive swath of land, similar to the Roman Empire or British Empire. Yet there isn't one global power. Oceans and seas separate people groups, and in some places, the open water can be particularly treacherous.
Sea serpents and mighty storms break many boats.
A giant desert separates one part of the continent from another, with a mighty mountain range dominating the southern stretches of the world.
From vast forests and jungles to fjords and archipelagos, Endari has everything. I'm hopeful readers will feel at home like many fantasy worlds while also being awed by incredible monuments and geographic locales.
Though many of the most unique places won't be discovered in the first book, of course.
What's most important to me, however, is how Soul interacts with the world. How was the planet's geography shaped by the magic of its universe? How is the weather impacted by an unseen energy field?
Some answers might feel obvious. Are the storms in the ocean formed by the great magical sea serpents? Is the noxious bog created by a strange formation of death shards?
Other answers may seem less clear. Was the bridge across the river naturally formed through erosion? Or was it shaped by an ancient Air soulic?
I want to create a world that feels alive in more than one way.
